Two-row SUVs have been dominating the auto market for years, and Toyota is now joining the trend. The automaker recently announced that it plans to launch a number of new products by 2021. Among them will be a completely redesigned version of its popular Tacoma truck. The new model is expected to arrive as a 2020 model year vehicle and will go on sale under the Tredigo brand.

This is one of several new names that Toyota revealed as part of an overall segment-wide refresh of its mid-size trucks and SUVs. In this article, we’ll take you through everything that you need to know about the future electric version of the Tacoma, starting with when we can expect it to arrive and ending with what other models might get electric variants in the near future. We’ll even throw in information on when it might reach overseas markets if you’re into that sort

What We Know So Far About the 2024 Toyota Tacoma ElectricWhen can we expect an electric version of the Tacoma?

Production of the Tacoma has not yet begun, but it’s expected to arrive as a 2020 model year vehicle. The entire Tredigo brand is going to be a complete redesign of the Tacoma, so the electrified version won’t arrive until 2021.

Toyota plans to bring the Tredigo Tacoma to the Canadian market in the fourth quarter of 2019, so we could see the first units arrive in the U.S. as early as late summer or early fall. The base Tacoma will be available with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the package TRD Off-Road will come standard with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Both of these models should be good candidates for an electric variant.

Specs and pricing of the Tredigo Tacoma

The new Tredigo Tacoma will arrive with a new chassis and a mid-life update is expected to bring a mild refresh in 2020. One of the key updates will be the new powertrain, but there’s no word on what exactly that will be just yet. The base Tacoma will come standard with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque.

It will also come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. A TRD Off-Road model with a 3.5-liter V-6 will likely be the most powerful Tacoma version. If it gets an electric variant, however, it will be even more powerful. Toyota will likely keep the price at around $25,000 for the base Tacoma and around $40,000 for the TRD Off-Road.

Toyota to launch new mid-size truck or SUV in 2021?

Toyota is bringing a new mid-size truck or SUV to the market in 2021, and some sources claim that the automaker is planning to refresh its Tacoma. An all-new version of the Tacoma could arrive as a 2021 model year vehicle, but it could also arrive as a 2022 model year vehicle. Sources claim that the new Tacoma will get a mild refresh in 2020 and should receive an all-new engine by 2021.

The powertrain for the new Tacoma will likely be the same as what’s found in the 2020 Camry, which is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission. The new Tacoma would be the first Toyota truck to go fully electric, so it would likely get a mild refresh similar to the one that the Camry received in late 2018.

Toyota to launch a new mid-size truck or SUV in 2024?

Another rumor about the new mid-sized truck that Toyota plans to launch in 2021 is that it will arrive as a 2024 model year vehicle. The new truck would be a completely redesigned version of the Tacoma, so it would likely get an all-new platform. If it does arrive as a 2024 model year vehicle, however, it might not get all-new technology right away.

The Tacoma will be redesigned, so it might be based on the same platform as the current model. Sources claim that Toyota is planning to launch the new mid-size truck in the first quarter of 2024. It will likely get an all-new powertrain. The new truck might get an all-electric variant if the automaker decides to debut a new model in the U.S. market.

Japanese automakers working on new mid-size truck or SUV?

Japanese automakers have been working on new mid-size trucks for years, and Toyota is likely one of them. A new truck from Toyota could arrive as soon as 2021, and it could get a mild refresh in 2020 or 2021. The refreshed version of the new Tacoma could get an all-new engine.

A new mid-size truck from Mazda could arrive as late as 2024, but it could get a mild refresh in 2020 or 2021 and not get a completely new powertrain. Honda could also be working on a new mid-size truck.

Final words: Should you buy a Toyota Tacoma?

The Tacoma is one of the most popular trucks on the market, so it makes sense that Toyota plans to launch a new version of it. The future of the midsized pickup is bright, but that’s not to say that the current version is bad. The Tacoma has been around since 2016 and is currently available in three trims: SR, SR5, and TRD Off-Road.

The TRD Off-Road is the most powerful version of the Tacoma and comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a dual exhaust, 18-inch all-terrain tires, a front locking differential, and a Bilstein front suspension. Outside of the TRD Off-Road, the Tacoma comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and a four-wheel drive system.

Finally, should you buy a Toyota Tacoma?

While there’s no doubt that the new Tacoma will be an all-new vehicle, it will likely get an update similar to the refresh that the Camry received in 2018. This means that it will likely get a mild refresh and not an all-new powertrain.

The Tacoma is a great truck and will likely be just as popular in the future, even with a mild refresh. The 2019 Tacoma has been redesigned and is available in three trims, which means it will likely be around for a while to come. If you’re in the market for a midsized truck, you should definitely consider the new Tacoma.
